Customer Reviews
I have a Yogourmet yogurt maker and also a smaller Salton yogurt maker. I use this yogurt culture in both of them. I have been using this yogurt starter for a couple of years now. I have tried many, and this one tastes the best. The yogurt is very thick. You can use 2% milk without adding any powdered milk and it will be thick. I prefer using whole milk and the yogurt is very thick. It has a delicious flavor that I've never tasted in any other yogurt. I let mine incubate for six hours and it tastes just right. I'm very happy that Amazon is selling it now!
I have this same starter in my fridge now at $5.75. I purchaced it less than a yr. ago, ordered through my local health foods store. I like this starter the best, because the cultures are best for health, according to the Specific Carb Diet, and the directions call for a higher temp to cool the yogurt to before putting into the yogurt maker. One brand had me waiting almost an hour before it was cool enough. On this type, the temps at which you can add the yogurt culture ranges between 104 - 112 F. I use 1 Q of non fat milk, and 1 Q of freshly made non fat milk made from NF Dry powder. When I take the fresh milk out of the microwave (having scaleded it for 6 min. on full power) I then add the cold powdered milk mixture immediately. This cools it down and it is usually at about 112 F. at this point! At most, I may have to only wait for up to 2 min. for the temp to be low enough. I love this!
I have found I can use half the starter that it calls for on the package, and I get nice firm yogurt. I make 24 hour yogurt, however if i want to use some at the 12 hour mark, I do so. I highly reccommend this starter, Yogourmet "Freeze-dried yogurt starter ; Creme Bulgare starter" -that is the title on the package. Try and get it at about $6. a package (of 3 10g packets) and then try using half the amount of the starter for each 2 quart batch. This will save you money. I do not believe the stregnth is affected, since the yogurt is firm.
